Chattem, Sanofi-Aventis get OK for Allegra OTC use

Federal regulators have OK'ed Allegra for over-the-counter sale as Chattanooga-based Chattem readies a big marketing campaign to launch the medication in the U.S. in March.

French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis and Chattem, its U.S. consumer health care division, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the Allegra family of allergy medication products for over-the-counter use in adults and children two years of age and older.

Also, Allegra-D, which also relieves nasal congestion and sinus pressure, will be available without a prescription, the companies said.
