Volkswagen monthly sales best since 2003

Volkswagen of America today reported sales climbed 27.9 percent last month over a year ago as VW posted its best May since 2003.

Jonathan Browning, VW of America's chief executive, said the company broke the 30,000 monthly sales mark without the new Passat or Beetle in the mix.

"I'm very encouraged by the opportunity the Passat represents for VW," he said by conference call to a group of automotive journalists in Chattanooga to drive the new midsize sedan made in the city. The Passat goes on sale this fall.
