A 49-year-old man remains in jail on a $200,000 bond after Chattanooga police say he punched and choked a woman to death at a residence inside the Emma Wheeler public housing complex.

Michael L. Crumpton, of Chattanooga, was arrested on a charge of criminal homicide early Wednesday after 42-year-old Victoria Godwin was taken to Erlanger hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

At 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call at Godwin's residence at 4931 Woodlandview Circle, where she was found unresponsive on the floor. Police believe she died as a result of the injuries but a medical examiner's report is pending.

Witnesses told police they heard a loud argument coming from leaving.

According to police, Crumpton reportedly became involved in an argument with the victim over grease spilled while cooking.
