NASHVILLE - Republican Gov. Bill Haslam's plan to make it harder for teachers to win and keep tenure passed the Senate this morning after heated debate.

The 21-12 vote was largely along party lines with one Democrat, Sen. Douglas Henry of Nashville, joining with Republicans in support of the bill.

The measure passed the House Education Subcommittee on Wednesday on a similar, largely party-line vote.

Senate Republicans and Democrats argued over the readiness of objective methods for evaluating teachers, which will help form the basis of decisions made about tenure for future.
