Bradley Red Cross closing emergency shelter

All homes in Bradley County that can receive electrical power now have it, and the Hiwassee chapter of the American Red Cross is closing its emergency shelter at St. Therese Catholic Church since all its occupants have found long-term housing, according to a news release.

Troy Spence, Bradley Emergency Management Agency director, said the shelter served as many as 27 people after the April 27 tornadoes that wreaked havoc in the community.

Spence said the Red Cross chapter also will close down its emergency feeding program since other community resources are now in place to provide services.

He said the local Red Cross chapter has received more than $60,000 in pledges and $48,000 in cash donations for disaster services.

Spence also said the Salvation Army is not accepting used clothing and furniture now, but that as people are resettled later, they will need furniture.
