Chattanooga DanceSport hosts ballroom parties

Chattanooga DanceSport is now hosting Friday night ballroom dance parties at Scenic City Dance Center for anyone who thinks they can dance or who would like to try.

"It's a chance for anyone to come out and try their skills with others dancers in a real laidback social setting," said Chattanooga DanceSport owner Denny Lennon.

Scenic City Dance Center, located in the building that formerly housed McKay's Bookstore, is the largest dance facility in town and is equipped with two floating dance floor systems, he said.

The parties, held from 8-11 p.m., are open to dancers of all abilities and teachers are always available to help beginners learn on the spot, said Lennon.

"It's a tremendous social outlet with no pressure except for the dancing," he said. "Once you're on the floor dancing and listening to the music you tend to forget about all of your other concerns. It takes your mind off the street and onto your feet."

The Friday night parties are an active dance opportunity rather than ballroom lessons, Lennon noted. Newcomers are welcome, but having at least one dance lesson before attending a party is encouraged to ensure participants will be able to actively participate in the dances, he said.

A full schedule of Chattanooga DanceSport parties is available at www.Chattanoogadancesport.com. Parties are not conducted during monthly USA Dance nights at Allemande Hall.

Lennon said the parties incorporate a wide variety of different types of ballroom dancing, from more traditional waltzes and foxtrots to newer Latin and swing dance varieties. Everyone gets an equal opportunity to try the different types of dances and learn something new, he said.
