Leaders hoping to earn a $1.85 million state grant have set up a website explaining their application to open a STEM school - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - in Hamilton County.

The site, www.setennesseestem.org, provides information on the application process, as well as all partners involved.

To qualify for the grant, the local school system must provide evidence of partnerships with higher education institutions, the business community and local philanthropic groups.

Together, the four groups have formed the Southeast Tennessee STEM Initiative to compete for the state's grant program. Applications are due by Dec. 30 and grant winners will be announced in January.

The state plans to offer a grant to one school each in West and East Tennessee. Those schools would have to open by next fall.
