City water pumps go dry in Benton, Tenn.

The water pumps in Benton, Tenn., have stopped functioning, Mayor Jerry Stephens said. The city is relying on Ocoee Utility and Etowah Utility to supply the city's water until the old pumps can be replaced with new ones.

Replacing the pumps shouldn't take longer than a week, Stephens said.

"We have the new pumps to go in," he said. "It's just a matter of pulling the old ones out and getting the new ones in."

For the meantime, Stephens recommended that residents boil their water before drinking it.

He said he won't know what happened to the old pumps until they've been removed and examined.
