A 6-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl are in critical condition after they were ejected from their mother's vehicle during a crash this afternoon, police said.

It is believed that neither child was restrained, said Chattanooga police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said. No charges have been filed in this case yet but an investigation is continuing, she said.

Witnesses told police that the children's mother - 38-year-old Rosalia Velasquez - was driving northbound on Rossville Boulevard about 4:40 p.m. and turned across traffic in front of another vehicle heading south, Weary said. The impact threw her daughter and son out of the vehicle, the sergeant said.

Police responding to the accident found the children in the roadway with serious injuries, Weary said. Velasquez suffered leg, arm and abdominal injuries, and she and her children have been hospitalized.

The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured and refused treatment at the scene, Weary said.
