Volkswagen said today it sold more of its Chattanooga-made Passat cars last month than what the company sold of its European-made Passats in all of 2010.
VW of America said March sales of the Passat totaled 10,032 units. In all of 2010, VW sold only 10,198 Passats.
Overall, Volkswagen said March vehicle sales in the U.S. were up by 34.6 percent over a year ago.
"March's strong sales of 36,588 units highlights a robust first quarter for 2012 for Volkswagen and we are poised for continued growth this calendar year," Jonathan Browning, president and CEO of Volkswagen of America, said in a statement today. "The new Passat has become a true success story, and it's having a great impact across our company here in the U.S."
