CLEVELAND, TN - Ocoee Middle School eighth grader Logan Pierce is being called "the next Steve Jobs" by his teachers. No pressure, right?

Pierce laughs off the comparison, but his ever-growing number of awards suggests his teachers may be on the money. In March, Pierce brought home first prize from the Chattanooga Regional Science and Engineering fair at UTC. More than fifty judges from local industries judged projects that were submitted by hundreds of Tennessee middle and high school students. At the end of the evening, Pierce was the only public school student to win a first place award.

Pierce won the Chambliss, Bahner and Stophel Patent Award, the Engineers' top award, and first place in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His invention: an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that robotically maneuvers up to fifty feet below the surface with a live video feed that projects to an LCD screen on the unit's control box.
