Whitfield County elementary student disciplined for bringing toy gun to school

A Dawnville Elementary School student was disciplined for bringing a toy gun to school Tuesday.

The Airsoft handgun, which shoots plastic pellets, was unloaded and the student didn't make any threats, "he just wanted to show it to his friends," according to a Whitfield County Sheriff's Office report.

The student, who isn't being named because he's a juvenile, had the toy gun in his binder and showed it to several students.

Principal Sherri Travisano reported the incident at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday. School district spokesman Eric Beavers said Thursday that he couldn't give details about the disciplinary action.

"The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prevents us from discussing individual student discipline," Beavers said in an email.
