East Ridge City Council deadline this week

When East Ridge citizens head to the polls this November, they will have the opportunity to vote for two City Council positions.

The qualifying deadline for people interested in running for those positions is Aug. 16 at noon. So far Marc Gravitt, Denny Manning, Patricia Cassidy, John Clemmer, Stephen King, Ann Pruett, David Swindall and Mimi Lowrey have picked up petitions to vie for the spots.

In order to qualify as a candidate, those interested in running must be at least 18 years old, a resident of East Ridge, a registered voter and collect 25 signatures on a petition supplied through the Hamilton County Election Commission.

"We need 25 good signatures, so we encourage people to get 30, 35 or 40 total signatures," said Hamilton County Administrator of Elections Charlotte Mullis-Morgan. "By good signatures we mean someone who is a registered voter in the district where the candidate is running."

Candidate financial reports are not due to the Election Commission until after the candidate has qualified, Morgan said.

Voters who are unable to be present during regular voting for the Nov. 6 election in which these seats will be determined may pick up an absentee ballot between Aug. 8 and Oct. 30.
