Five Hamilton County elementary schools and middle-high magnet school earned recognition as Tennessee's "Reward Schools" today.
The elementary schools - Big Ridge, Harrison, Lookout Mountain, East Side and Thrasher - and Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts were honored for their students earning the highest overall proficiency and/or highest overall progress on Tennessee's standardized tests.
Reward Schools are a new classification under Tennessee's accountability system, which replaces No Child Left Behind.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced the top schools during a news conference livestreamed statewide.
County school administrators, Board of Education members and local educators watched the news conference at CCA.
State education officials said that Reward Schools will be eligible to apply for competitive grants to strengthen their programs. About $2 million is up for grabs.
