Baked goods sweeten school day for Thrasher students

The school bus stop at the corner of James Boulevard and Louisiana Avenue has become the place to be for Thrasher Elementary students at the end of the day. The number of students using the stop has increased by five since school started, thanks to a group of moms that provides a special treat for students as they close out the school day.

Thrasher mom Tracy Steen started the trend by bringing freshly baked cupcakes for students to enjoy as they stepped off the bus on the first day of school.

"The kids were so excited," said Leah Gallant, one of eight Thrasher moms that now rotate the responsibility of providing baked goods to students at the stop. "We just loved the idea of sharing with everyone."

Kids received a treat every day during the first week of school, including offerings of chocolate chip cookies, Oreo cookie balls, cupcakes, brownies and candy.

"They run to us as soon as they get off the bus," said Gallant. "Kids love sweets, and it gives them something to look forward to at the end of the day."

While the moms have ceased to provide baked goods at the stop daily, Gallant said she and the other bakers plan to continue to offer goodies on Fridays throughout the school year.
