Firefighters battle blaze in downtown Scottsboro, Ala.

A city fire marshal is now investigating was caused the early morning flames that destroyed a building in Scottsboro's downtown square.

The fire inside the two-story Derick's Realty was reported at 4:25 a.m., Fire Chief Chris White said. It took about 90 minutes for crews to bring it under control, he said.

The building in the northern corner of the town square was a total loss, with heavy fire damage and a collapsed roof. Another business next door suffered heavy water damage, he said.

Most of the buildings within the town's square are more than 100 years old, White said.

Authorities are still investigating were the fire began and what ignited the flames, he said. Investigators hope to make a determination on the cause by Thursday, he said.

No one was inside when the building burned, White said.
