Summerville recycling plant fire still burning

A blaze broke out Friday afternoon, sending thick clouds of black smoke billowing into the sky.

Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters said this afternoon that firefighters are making progress toward containing the fire at a recycling plant in Summerville, Ga.

The blaze broke out Friday afternoon, sending thick clouds of black smoke billowing into the sky.

Wiinters told The Associated Press two firefighters suffered heat-related problems but were treated at the scene.

WRCB-TV reported today that the Georgia Emergency Management Agency ordered everyone within a quarter-mile of the plant evacuated. Firefighters from nearby Catoosa, Walker, Polk, Bartow, Floyd and Cherokee Counties have been called in to help fight the fire.
