Hamilton County has been awarded a state grant that will be used to start a a high school focused on science, technology, engineering and math at Chattanooga State Community College.

The $1.85 million grant, announced today by Gov. Bill Haslam, will be used for the school, known as STEM and slated for the former Olan Mills building that sits next to the main Chattanooga State campus. The building was purchased by the school in 2010.

Last week, Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Rick Smith said he hoped to start work as early as this week to ready the school's 17,000 square feet.

Putnam and Sullivan counties also received grants to start STEM schools.
