Volkswagen sales in September rose 34.4 percent in the U.S. on the back of the Chattanooga-made Passat and VW's Tiguan sport utility vehicle, the company reported today.

The automaker posted its best September in the U.S. since 1972 with sales of 36,663 vehicles.

"We had continued strong performance from Passat," said Jonathan Browning, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America in a conference call with analysts and journalists.

The Passat recently came in first in Motor Trend's 2012-13 comparison test with other midsize vehicles, Browning said. Some 9,500 Passats were sold last month.

Through September, VW's U.S. sales have risen 37.2 percent.
