Georgia to pay more than $8 million in unemployment

ATLANTA - The state must pay more than $8 million to about 4,000 seasonally jobless workers who were denied payments last year.

Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Mark Butler tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the state must pay the denied unemployment because legislation to support denying the payments failed at the tail end of the 2013 General Assembly.

Butler says the employees - which include privately-employed public school and university workers - should not be eligible for the benefits during summer or holiday breaks since teachers and other school system employees aren't.

The money will come from the state's unemployment trust fund, which is supported by business taxes. The newspaper reports the state already owes $500 million in federal loans that have kept the fund afloat.
