COLUMBUS, Ga. - A new whitewater course is scheduled to open on the Chattahoochee River in Columbus on Memorial Day.
It is a $24.4 million project that has been funded with both public and private money.
The Columbus Ledger Enquirer reported that donations included a $5 million gift from the W.C. Bradley Co. That's a company that makes char-broil grills and other products.
John Turner, chairman of the Chattahoochee River Restoration Committee and W.C. Bradley board member, said the project will improve the habitat for fish all along the river and streams in the Columbus area.
The 2.5-mile whitewater course has been planned for more than a decade. More than 188,000 people are expected to come to the Columbus area to kayak, raft or canoe on the whitewater course.
