East Georgia call center could mean up to 400 jobs

MARTINEZ, Ga. - Authorities say up to 400 jobs will be created by a new Urban Outfitters call center coming to Columbia County in east Georgia.

The company said in a statement that it expects to open the center with 200 initial hires by Aug. 1. Company officials say they expect to create 400 jobs within the next five years.

Morris News Service reports that the company's decision to locate its call center in the 40,000-square-foot vacant storefront in Martinez was aided by Columbia County's new "opportunity zone" designation. In that zone, businesses relocating or expanding in the allotted area are eligible for state tax credits.

Urban Outfitters is a specialty clothing company with stores throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. The company also owns the Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain and BHLDN brands.
