Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said today he's optimistic that Volkswagen's Chattanooga assembly plant can garner a new vehicle.

He said at a visit to the Chattanooga plant that the state and VW officials are talking.

"There has been a lot of back and forth," the Governor said.

Also, Haslam said he's willing to meet with top VW labor leaders from Germany about the potential for the plant to be organized by the United Auto Workers.

Haslam has expressed concerns about the UAW effort.

A decision related to a new product for Chattanooga is expected to come later this year.

The Chattanooga factory is competing with a VW facility in Mexico.
