Coahulla Creek Colts
Coach: Jared Hamlin (2-8 in one year here; 43-38 overall)
Last year: 2-8 1-6 in 5-AAA
13 dreams: The coaches had an idea, but the Colts had no idea what they were going up against in their first varsity year. The players learned that it's a different level of competition where everything needs to be crisper, quicker and mightier. The challenge increased in difficulty almost each week, but the Colts started to get the hang of it by the end of the year despite lopsided losses.
13-for-13 contenders: Coach Hamlin isn't afraid to say it out loud: "I think we're going to see more success this year in terms of wins and losses. We're bigger, stronger, faster, and we're seeing the progression." The Colts have 20 seniors on the roster, providing skill and strength at several positions. Michael Ward (6-foot-1, 170) is a solid route-runner for quarterback Blaine Williams (5-11, 180) who is becoming more accurate by the day. As soon as senior receiver and defensive back Erick Dominguez (6-2, 185) returns from a spring ankle injury, the Colts will improve.
Number of interest: 12 - That's the closest margin of defeat for the Colts last year. Their wins were by 49 and 12 points.
13 years ago: The field and all the property where the state-of-the-art high school is located were pastures, fields and forests. Hamlin was coaching in Bartow, Fla.
Program superstition: Coahulla is too new to have any traditions or superstitions, but Hamlin said they're trying to get a horse in the stadium for every game. No success yet.
1-through-3: Senior safety/receiver Erick Dominguez
A. I broke my ankle in May and I spent most of the summer icing my ankle and getting therapy.
Q. Is there a fun story about how you broke it? Or is it tragic?
A. It was during spring practice. I was just running my route.
Q. Because you missed playing sports, and 7-on-7 games with teammates, how much more do you enjoy having the season here?
A. I'm ready for it. I'm ready to be 100 percent and ready to help the team where I can. I missed it.
