Barbara Shepherd will become principal at DuPont Elementary after school resumes in January.

Current DuPont Principal Janice Scott said she is retiring at the end of the year for personal reasons. Scott has been a Hamilton County educator for 34 years.

"I have enjoyed all of them," she said. "This is kind of bittersweet. My husband is having some health issues so I have to retire. I do hate to go, but you've got to do what you've got to do."

Superintendent Rick Smith announced Shepherd's appointment today. She is currently the assistant principal at Brown International Academy. Shepherd will take the reigns at DuPont on Jan. 6.
