Troubled pub shut for year
ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. - Members of the Roane County Beer Board recently voted unanimously in special session to yank the permit for the Grill & Pub, located outside Harriman on U.S. Highway 27, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The revocation, which went into effect immediately, is for one year.
The action came after an employee sold a beer to an underage undercover operative Jan. 24, according to court records. Sheriff Jack Stockton subsequently recommended that the tavern's license be revoked.
Deputies have responded to numerous complaints at the tavern, formerly the Big Orange Grill & Pub.
In July 2011, a 46-year-old man died after another patron hit him on the head during a fuss over a fender-bender in the bar's parking lot.
2 people dead in murder-suicide
ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. - Authorities say two people are dead after an apparent murder and suicide at the upscale Barnsley Gardens resort.
Bartow County sheriff's Sgt. Jonathan Rogers told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that deputies went to the resort in the Adairsville area about 2:40 a.m. Thursday. They found an unidentified female clerk who had been shot. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Rogers said deputies discovered that a man suspected of shooting her fled into nearby woods and refused to come out. He said they searched the area and found the suspected gunman dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rogers said the shootings are considered to be "family violence-related."
Tax holiday this weekend
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama residents buying supplies they need to make it through times of severe weather will not have to pay sales tax for certain items this weekend.
Gov. Robert Bentley said Wednesday people need to take advantage of the break from Alabama's sales tax to stock up on supplies such as battery-powered radios, weather radios, first aid kits, portable generators and plywood.
The sales tax holiday began at 12:01 a.m. today and runs through the end of the day Sunday.
Items covered by the sales tax holiday must cost $60 or less with the exception of generators, which must cost $1,000 or less.
Lottery winner claims $1 million
TRION, Ga. - A Chattooga County, Ga., man has won the top prize of $1 million in the Georgia Lottery's Monopoly Millionaire instant game, a news release states.
Robert Dalton, 45, of Trion, scratched the winning ticket in the parking lot of the store where he bought it, Trion Food Mart at 11 Ridgeway Drive.
"It feels really good," Dalton said, adding he intends to invest the money.
