Collegedale expands proposed smoking ban

The Collegedale City Commission decided at its most recent meeting to expand a proposed smoking ban making its way through city government, to all recreational facilities within the city with the exception of the greenway.

Those recreational facilities include city-owned pavilions, playgrounds, fields and courts - the new pickleball court in particular.

"We could ban smoking in all recreation facilities initially excluding the greenway, then down the road we may want to do the greenway," said Vice Mayor Tim Johnson.

At the Commission's next regularly scheduled meeting July 1, officials are scheduled to take their second and final vote on the ordinance.

Should the ban be implemented, the city will post "No smoking" signs around areas where smoking is banned and back it up with police enforcement if necessary.

Additionally at its most recent meeting, the Commission approved bids for new playground equipment that will be installed along the greenway at the Nature Nook near Tallant Road and near the greenway's intersection with Tucker Road.

The new equipment is being funded primarily through a more than $100,000 anonymous donation to the city's parks and recreation board.
