ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team got 13 points from Alex Black and 12 each from Kayla Christopher and Faith Dupree in the Lady Mocs' 78-53 win over Georgia Southern today to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament.
Playing in front of a crowd of more than 500 at UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena, about 80 percent of them wearing UTC colors, the top-seeded Lady Mocs took control of the game with an 18-2 run early in the second half.
"We knew we might start off a little slow [after not playing since last Saturday]," Dupree said. "The second half, we came out and pushed and kept going at them."
After leading 42-32 at the break, UTC (27-3) scored 15 straight early in the second period, pushing the margin to 60-36. There wasn't much drama in the final 10 minutes as UTC went to its bench. No Lady Mocs played more than 25 minutes, so they should be well rested for the semifinals.
In the semifinals, UTC plays the No. 4 Appalachian State/No. 5 College of Charleston winner at the U.S. Cellular Center at noon on Sunday.
