2 nabbed in Bradley County car theft

Two suspects in the theft of a disabled car on Interstate 75 in Bradley County are in custody, authorities said.

Sammy Mikel and Elizabeth Ann Mikel Jones are charged with two counts of theft of property two counts, conspiracy to commit theft of property and burglary of a motor vehicle. Mikel is additionally charged with theft over $1,000.

According to a Bradley Sheriff's Office news release. Ashley Chavez, of Knoxville, was traveling north when a tire went flat on her Honda Civic. She pulled over and called a friend to pick her up.

When they came back for the car, they saw two people in a Ford Ranger pickup pushing the Honda toward exit 20, the release stated.

Chavez and her companion confronted the thieves and struggled with them. Motorists who saw the fracas reported the truck's tag number to Bradley 911, but the suspects drove away before deputies arrived.

Chavez told deputies the car's rear window was damaged and her wallet was missing.

The tag was registered to Mikel and Chavez recognized him in a photo, the release stated. Mikel, 38, and Jones, 35, were arrested Thursday night on South Church Street, where they live, according to the release.
