Birmingham delays demolishing old hotel called an eyesore

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham City Council is delaying a decision on whether to demolish an eyesore that's visible driving through the city on Interstate 65.

Council members today discussed tearing down an old hotel located beside I-65 near downtown. But WBRC-TV reports that members referred the matter to a committee without making a final decision.

The city would spend about $750,000 to tear down the building. The business was a Sheraton and then a Ramada Inn before switching to different names and falling into disrepair.

The building was condemned in 2010, but it's been the scene of at least two fires since. The latest blaze happened in July.

The city has been working for years to remove the old hotel to remove blight and spur new development.
