University of Georgia preparing investiture ceremony for new leader

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- The University of Georgia is preparing an investiture ceremony for its 22nd president, Jere Morehead.

UGA officials said in a statement Monday that the ceremony is Nov. 19 and will include remarks from Gov. Nathan Deal, University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby, University System of Georgia Board of Regents Chair William NeSmith and others. Morehead's predecessor, Dr. Michael Adams, was a longtime Chattanooga resident.

An investiture ceremony is an event in which the leader of an organization is presented with items signifying their authority over the institution. Before being chosen to serve as president, Morehead was UGA's senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

University officials say U.S. District Court Chief Judge Julie E. Carnes will preside over the ceremony and the vent is open to the public.

Organizers say the ceremony will be broadcast online.
