MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A National Guard recruiter has pleaded not guilty to charges he tried to kill four of his superiors at a West Tennessee armory.
Defense attorney Michael Stengel entered the plea for Sgt. 1st Class Amos Patton today in federal court in Memphis.
Prosecutors say the 42-year-old Patton opened fire inside the armory in Millington on Oct. 24 after he was told he would be relieved of duty and dismissed from active service for alleged misconduct.
An indictment says Patton was chased down and subdued by a fellow Guard member after fleeing the armory.
Authorities say three Guard members suffered minor injuries when they were shot in the leg area. The indictment says Patton assaulted the fourth Guard member with a weapon and engaged in physical contact with him.
