5 dogs rescued from suspected dogfighting ring

ANDALUSIA, Ala. - Humane Society officials say five dogs have been rescued from a suspected dogfighting ring less than two weeks after a massive crackdown that led to arrests in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

Humane Society spokeswoman Stephanie Twining says officials rescued the dogs from a Covington County property Wednesday night. Officials say the pit bull terriers appeared to be malnourished and had scars and other injuries that were consistent with dogfighting.

Officials say the dogs will be taken for veterinary treatment.

Twining says an ongoing investigation into dogfighting in the region involves the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Auburn police, the Coffee County Sheriff's office and the U.S. Attorney's Office.
