CLEVELAND, Tenn. - An assistant coach with the Bradley Central High School girls basketball team has been suspended without pay pending the resolution of a criminal investigation by the Bradley County Sheriff's Office.

Kyle Copeland, who has taught at the school for four years, was suspended Wednesday, county school system Director Johnny McDaniel said Friday. Copeland was suspended after the school system was notified of the investigation by law enforcement, the director said.

McDaniel said he could make no further statements on the matter and referred queries to the 10th Judicial District Attorney's Office, which prosecutes cases in Bradley, McMinn and Polk counties.

No one with the district attorney's office could be reached Friday for comment about the case.

"We can only confirm that a Bradley County high school teacher is under investigation at this point," said Bob Gault, spokesman for the Bradley County Sheriff's Office.

Copeland could not be reached for comment.
