BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Powerful storms forecast to cross Alabama will bring a threat of tornadoes and flash flooding, especially in northern and central regions of the state.

The National Weather Service says a storm system moving slowly toward the Tennessee Valley will bring heavy rains and possible flash flooding beginning this afternoon. Forecasters say there's also a significant risk of tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds and hail.

Al.com reports more than 20 city and county school systems - including public schools in Athens, Decatur and Muscle Shoals - planned to close early today because of the threat of severe weather.

National Weather Service forecasters say the potential for dangerous weather will persist in Alabama until at least Tuesday morning.
