MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis police and the Drug Enforcement Administration say they took back more than 2,000 pounds of prescription drugs from West Tennessee residents who didn't want or need them anymore.

The agencies held an event Saturday in which residents could hand over potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Police said the total collected in Shelby County was about 1,450 pounds. The total for all of West Tennessee was 2,223 pounds.

Officials said the goal of the take-back initiative was to remove from homes addictive drugs that can be abused or misused.
