Chattanooga police arrested a 41-year-old man and charged him with murder in the July stabbing death of 23-year-old Jeffery "Hot Dog" Jackson.

Wendell "Dooney" Mitchell is charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is in jail on a $1 million bond.

Witnesses told police Mitchell and Jackson fought on July 27 - the night of the murder, according to the affidavit. Witnesses said Jackson punched Mitchell in the face because Mitchell was choking an elderly man outside the apartment complex at 2525 6th Avenue.

Both men apparently walked away from that altercation, but witnesses said the pair had another altercation later that night. That time, witnesses saw Jackson running from Mitchell, according to the affidavit.

After fleeing from Mitchell, Jackson collapsed on the sidewalk and said to witnesses, "Damn, this [racial slur] just stuck me."

Jackson was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Mitchell's first court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 19.
