Relatives charged for punishing 9-year-old by holding her under water in bathtub

BRYAN, Texas - Relatives of a 9-year-old Bryan girl have been charged for holding her down in water in a bathtub as punishment for acting up in school.

The Bryan-College Station Eagle reports the girl's mother, father, grandmother and grandmother's roommate were arrested Friday and charged with abandoning or endangering a child.

Police say the girl told investigators that in early December her grandmother told her to get into the bathtub half filled with water at the grandmother's Bryan home.

Police say the girl described it "like a baptism" during which she would be asked a question and subsequently dipped and held under water by her grandmother, father and grandmother's roommate.

Abandoning or endangering a child is a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail.
