Chattanooga attorney Gerald Webb II has been appointed as Erlanger Health System's newest board member.

The Hamilton County legislative delegation unanimously decided on Webb's appointment, which was announced at the Hamilton County Pachyderm meeting Monday.

State Sen. Todd Gardenhire, R-Chattanooga, said members of the delegation have long discussed wanting to appoint someone to the public hospital board who is well-versed in health care compliance issues.

Webb has an "extensive" background in compliance, Gardenhire said.

"[Rep. Mike Carter, R-Ooltewah] had worked with Gerald both as a DA and when he was at Life Care and recommended him," said Gardenhire. "Once we started doing our due diligence, he was really the only name that we stuck with."

Webb, who is a private criminal defense attorney in the Chattanooga law firm Speek, Webb, Turner and Newkirk, previously several years at Life Care Centers of America in Cleveland, Tenn., where he advised company leaders on compliance obligations and progress.

Webb also previously served as an assistant district attorney in the Hamilton County district attorney's office.

"I look forward to working with the leadership and employees at Erlanger to help maintain the goals and high-quality health care that Erlanger has consistently provided over the years," Webb said in a prepared statement.

There are two other trustee seats that remain vacant on Erlanger's 11-member board.
