The Maiden Voyage: Titanic the Musical

I'm flying, Jack," is the phrase that comes to mind for most of us whenever the subject of the Titanic is mentioned. This line is almost instantaneously followed by someone dramatically belting out the familiar chorus of My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion.

Now, as much as we all love Jack and Rose and their fictional ill-fated love story, Rossville, Ga.-based Closed Door Entertainment will be producing the five time Tony award winning Titanic the Musical at the Tivoli Theatre from April 11-12, which will bring life to the real historical characters who were aboard the doomed ocean liner back in 1912.

"The film is great, but not all the characters were real," says Grace Kling, marketing director and choreographer for Closed Door Entertainment. "This musical is truly perfect. You get to learn more about people who were actually on the boat and follow their journey."

This production, which tells the astonishing tale of "the unsinkable ship" on its maiden voyage, first hit Broadway in 1997 and won a Tony award for Best Musical. It will be returning to Broadway this fall.

"It is so beautifully written and powerful," says Kling. "In the beginning of the show you get to invest in these characters and begin to love them, but then in Act 2 your heart breaks when you realize their fate." Titanic the Musical will make its debut in the Chattanooga area 102 years to the day from when the ship was sailing across the Atlantic from April 10 until it sank early in the morning of April 15.

"The story has to be told," she says. "It is one of those parts in our history where we just wonder what happened. The musical offers a bit of comedy and a beautiful drama you will love from beginning to end." Closed Door Entertainment will also be coordinating with the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge to set up an exhibit in the lobby, giving attendees the chance to learn even more about the historical characters aboard the ship.

"Come see the show even though you know what happens," says Kling. "It is so moving and powerful that you are smiling even while you are crying."
