Two of three charges against nonprofit director Richard Bennett were dropped by an assistant district attorney today.

A charge of possession of a controlled substance and violation of open container laws were dismissed by the prosecutor in Hamilton County Sessions Court.

The charges stem from a June 6 incident in East Lake Park. Police said they found Bennett, former director of A Better Tomorrow, in a minivan with a woman, two open beer bottles and an open bottle of tequila, less than a gram of marijuana and a keychain containter full of hydrocodone pills.

It was not immediately clear if Bennett's remaining charge, possession of a controlled substance, is related to the marijuana or to the hydrocodone pills.

Bennett's nonprofit was connected to Chattanooga's Violence Reduction Initiative. His involvement was halted after the June arrest, city officials said.
