A normal afternoon turned into bloody commotion at the Mapco gas station at Holtzclaw Avenue and East Third Street on Sunday when a shooting victim showed up in the parking lot.

According to police, a 20-year-old man was shot on Wilcox Boulevard. He drove himself to the gas station, where 911 was called.

Javoris Akins was shot in the shoulder and the foot at 1700 Wilcox Blvd. and drove slightly more than a mile to the Mapco at 1265 E. Third St., not far from Erlanger hospital. Police responded to a "person shot" call just after 3 p.m., and an ambulance carried someone away about 3:15.

No suspect information was available Sunday, but Akins' injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

The gray Pontiac Akins was driving had bullet holes in the windshield, hood and door, and the front passenger-side window was shattered.

Blood was visible on the gas station parking lot in the minutes after Akins arrived, and another man, who witnesses said was in the car with Akins, had bloodstains on his pants as he spoke to police officers.

The man declined to speak to a reporter about what happened. Customers at the gas station stood outside pondering what may have prompted a shooting in broad daylight.

It wasn't the only instance of gunfire in the city on Sunday.

Shots rang out on Teakwood Drive along Highway 58 late in the morning, leaving multiple bullet holes in one mailbox.

Several police cars responded to the area, but a police spokesman said in an afternoon statement he had not heard anything about the incident.
