Why didn't the Hamilton County Department of Education just cancel school today - instead of having kids come in and then leave at noon - when school officials knew a big snow storm was coming?

The early dismissal came as a surprise to parents. Some had barely dropped off their kids at school when their phone rang advising them to come back and get them in a few hours.

School was held because yesterday's National Weather Service prediction called for snow to hit after 4 p.m., but this morning that changed to 2 p.m., Assistant Superintendent Lee McDade said.

"Yesterday, they were calling for the weather to come in after 4," McDade said.

When the storm prediction changed to 2 p.m., he said, "I didn't want to risk it."

If Tennessee students get in half a day of school, the state counts it as a full day.

But McDade said that didn't influence the district's decision Tuesday to hold school today.

"We're not looking at anything except student, faculty and staff safety," he said.
