A Jasper, Tenn., woman was jailed on an aggravated assault charge after a nonfatal shooting Tuesday night in eastern Marion County.

Lisa Freeman, 47, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the shooting of 18-year-old Jaleel Pickett, who was wounded in the stomach, Marion County Sheriff Ronnie "Bo" Burnett said Wednesday.

Pickett went to Parkridge West Hospital in Jasper where he was treated for the wound. Medical officials there notified Marion authorities of the injury.

Burnett said a woman and her new boyfriend, Pickett, went to her ex-boyfriend's house on R.A. Griffith Highway and the three got into an argument.

The sheriff said the ex-boyfriend's mother, Freeman, became involved in the argument as it grew more heated and the shot was fired. Detectives determined through interviews that Freeman fired the shot, Burnett said.

Detective Matt Blansett said the argument erupted over racial slurs in a Facebook post. The victim, Pickett, is black, while his new girlfriend, Freeman and the ex-boyfriend are white.

Blansett said a small-caliber handgun was used in the shooting.

"He was lucky," Blansett said.
