LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Gwinnett County prosecutors say a man has been sentenced in the shooting death of his 23-month-old grandson.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Dan Mayfield tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the trial of 41-year-old Luis Efrain Torres was supposed to begin this week but he decided to plead guilty to lesser charges.

Authorities say the man's grandson, Deandre Vega, was shot during an argument between Torres and the boy's father in August 2013. Police have said the boy wasn't the intended target.

Officials say Torres was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault, but pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Mayfield says Torres was given a 20-year sentence and is ordered to serve 15 in confinement.
