SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (AP) - Officials have arrested a girls' softball umpire on charges of violating the sex offender registry.

The Robertson County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that authorities arrested 52-year-old Herman Lee Brown, a registered sex offender, after receiving a tip that he had been officiating games in Robertson and neighboring counties.

The Tennessean reports that Brown is prohibited from entering school property or obtaining employment within 1,000 feet of a school. According to the Tennessee sex offender registry, Brown is listed as a violent offender after being convicted in connection with a 2000 rape.

Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Executive Director Bernard Childress says Brown did not indicate that he had been convicted of a felony when he registered as an umpire.

It's unclear if Brown has an attorney.
