The Hamilton County Board of Education voted to name Kirk Kelly interim superintendent.

Kelly has been acting co-superintendent since former-Superintendent Rick Smith stepped down from the position March 14.

The board interviewed three candidates this afternoon for the position, before voting.

School board members Steve Highlander, Joe Galloway, George Ricks, Karitsa Mosley and David Testerman voted for Kelly.

Jill Levine, principal at Normal Park Museum Magnet School, and Shaun Sadler, retired Marine commanding officer, were also interviewed.

School board members Jonathan Welch and Donna Horn cast votes for Levine. Rhonda Thurman and Greg Martin voted for Sadler.

The search for an interim-superintendent began when former-Superintendent Rick Smith resigned from the position March 14, after weathering more than three tumultuous months at the helm following the rape of an Ooltewah High School freshman, allegedly by three of his basketball teammates.
