Georgia man charged with leaving baby great-grandson in car

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah police say a man is charged with cruelty to children and neglect after officers found his infant great-grandchild left alone in a car outside a salvage yard.

Savannah-Chatham County police said in a news release that 67-year-old Joe Palmer was arrested Tuesday after a bystander reported seeing the baby crying in the back of a parked car with its windows rolled down about an inch.

Police say investigators suspect the 6-month-old boy, who was taken to a local hospital, had been left in the car for more than an hour while Palmer was in the salvage yard.

National Weather Service data shows the temperature in Savannah was about 82 degrees early Tuesday afternoon when the child was found.

It was not immediately known if Palmer had an attorney.
