Fire officials said a candle was probably the cause of a Christmas Day fire that sent a Chattanooga woman to the hospital.

Firefighters responded to a call in the 900 block of East 10th Street about 1:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they reported they could not see any sign of fire from the street.

But on further investigation, they said, they discovered a sofa on fire in the upstairs portion of the house.

Firefighters said they were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

A woman in the house was carried from the building and treated for first-degree burns on her hands and for smoke inhalation.

She was taken to Erlanger hospital by Hamilton County EMS.

Firefighters said they checked the entire house and attic but the fire was contained to the sofa and a rug.

Captain Henry McElvain with the fire investigation division said the cause of the fire was most likely a candle.
