The Dalton Police Department is investigating the theft of nearly $6,000 worth of rare coins from a home on Wycliffe Drive.

A potential suspect was recorded on surveillance video at a neighboring house, according to a police new release.

The incident happened sometime between 5-7 a.m. on Jan. 9. Dalton officers were called to a house on Wycliffe Drive after two people hired to take care of the homeowner's pets came to the house and discovered a back door had been kicked in. Responding officers found that several rooms were in disarray, according to the release.

After taking inventory, the homeowner reported that among the missing items were a large number of uncirculated state quarters. Also missing were other rare coins. The homeowner estimated the value of the collection to be $6,000. The burglar also stole old tax documents and Social Security information.

A neighbor checked his home's surveillance system and found video from around the same time that showed a male with a gray hooded sweatshirt walking across the driveway and pulling on the door handle of the neighbor's car, which was locked. The suspect then walked off in the direction of the burglarized house.

Investigators do believe the suspect left in a red Nissan Altima that was also recorded leaving the area.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact Detective Chris Tucker at 706-278-9085, dial 9 and enter extension 165.
